apple computer developed their first international retail location in tokyo, japan, renovating a concrete frame building. the completely redesigned façade and interior establish a strong presence by presenting a perfectly rectilinear volume with uniform, clean lines and a simple material palette.
the façade uses bead-blasted stainless steel panels at the first three levels and an open-joint glass rain screen at the upper floors. a minimal curtain of ceramic-fritted, laminated glass panels provide thermal protection to the inner enclosure. gaps at the bottom and top of the outer skin allow natural air circulation, and the glass functions as an acoustical and weather barrier for the operable inner façade. inside, floor-to-ceiling apertures let in a full perimeter of natural light.
